Redemption is the status that most TLDs enter if they are not renewed in time.
When the domain expires, your website and mail service will stop functioning, and no changes can be made to the domain. If you do not renew the domain name within the renew grace period, it enters a redemption period at the Registry. At this stage, the domain may be placed into the auction and then auctioned off by the upstream vendors.
More details about domains' grace periods can be checked in the "TLDs' grace periods" article.
As an owner, you still have an option to return the domain at this stage (if it's not auctioned off) for a
redemption price (plus
$0.18 ICANN fee for generic TLDs). You can check redemption prices
here.
PLEASE NOTE: No changes can be made to expired domains, including contact details update.
That's it!
