WordPress is one of the most popular website platforms in the world, powering millions of sites due to its user-friendly interface, flexibility, and extensive customization options. However, like any widely-used software, it can become a target for cyber attackers who look for vulnerabilities to exploit. To prevent those cyber attacks on your website, we developed a special security tool HackGuardian, a feature specially made by Namecheap for EasyWP users.

What is HackGuardian?

HackGuardian is a free feature that is included with all EasyWP subscriptions. When enabled, it limits access to your WordPress file system by activating partial read-only mode. This mode prevents changes to your website's files and content. HackGuardian does not change file permissions or ownership; instead, it operates seamlessly in the background, providing robust protection without disrupting your site’s functionality.

Its user-friendly management allows powerful protection to be enabled effortlessly with a few clicks. You can activate the security tool in a few ways without interrupting your work on the website.

From within the EasyWP dashboard:

1. To get started, log in to your EasyWP dashboard and select the EasyWP subscription for which you would like to enable a partial read-only mode.
2. Next, navigate to the Security tab:

3. Click the toggle to enable HackGuardian. The switch will turn green, and the status will say “Enabled”:

4. When necessary, disable HackGuardian by clicking the toggle again. The switch will turn gray, and the status will say “Disabled”:

In the WordPress dashboard:

HackGuardian can be managed from the top of the page in the WordPress dashboard by toggling the switch:

With HackGuardian enabled, you can upload new images, create forms, and add/modify pages and posts. Additionally, EasyWP dashboard activities, like creating backups or putting your site into maintenance mode aren’t affected.

When should I deactivate HackGuadian?

Since HackGuardian helps protect your website's files by limiting modifications, it's important to be aware of any potential limitations. You should disable the tool when:
  • accessing SFTP files;
  • installing a WordPress theme or plugin;
  • editing files directly via certain file managers within the WordPress admin panel.
However, managing these limitations is straightforward. With administrator access, you can adjust settings instantly, ensuring minimal disruption to your site’s development and management. Updates to plugins/themes and WordPress versions can be handled without the need to deactivate HackGuardian manually. During the update process, it will be automatically and temporarily disabled.

Will I benefit from HackGuardian?

Website security is more critical than ever nowadays. By activating HackGuardian, you instantly add a robust layer of protection to your website. It offers a simple yet effective way to enhance your website’s security.

Alongside HackGuardian, our MalwareGuardian adds an additional layer of security, including features like website scanning. By combining these tools, you can ensure robust protection for your site, giving you the freedom to focus on growing your online business and enhancing customer satisfaction.
