What is the difference between ‘domain mapping’ and ‘domain transfer’?

You can use your Namecheap domain name with any hosting/website-building service of your choice. All you need to do is to connect your domain name with your chosen service by the means of domain mapping.

Put simply, domain mapping means connecting a domain name to a web-hosting server. This method associates your domain with your website, and the domain continues to be registered, managed and renewed with Namecheap.

Domain mapping allows you to take control of your domain name settings and emails within your Namecheap account, as well as use our free email forwarding, and take advantage of our free domain privacy protection service.

Some providers may tell you that the only way to verify the domain for using their service is to transfer the domain registration to them and ask you to provide the Auth/EPP code to verify the domain.

Please be aware that this is untrue, and an EPP code should only be requested if domain registration is being transferred to them. There are alternative ways to verify your domain such as creating host records, updating nameservers, etc.

As you might have already understood from above, a domain transfer is when you move your domain from one domain registrar to another. Once this process is completed, the new registrar will maintain all relevant information regarding the domain and the registrant.

NB:
  • If you choose to transfer your domain, you will not be able to take advantage of our competitive renewal prices or use Domain Privacy for free.
  • An additional charge may occur, as the domain will be renewed for another year.
  • Any domain which has been newly registered or transferred from one registrar to another within the last 60 days, will not be eligible for transfer.
  • It is not necessary to transfer a domain out of Namecheap to connect it to a third-party service. Moreover, the transfer process may take up to 10 days to be completed while it is possible to connect a domain to your website within several minutes or hours.
If you’ve decided to continue with domain mapping, you can review the 3rd Party Services Setup section in our Knowledgebase as we have the guides on mapping Namecheap-registered domains to the most popular services.

If you don't see the needed service there, you can add the host records obtained from your service provider following the steps in How do I set up host records for a domain? or by contacting our 24/7 expert support team.
