It’s time to learn
You’ve already discovered that GeoTLDs and ccTLDs were created to be area or country-specific domains. Generic top-level domains (gTLDs) however, were broader and for general purpose.
For example, .com derived from the word ‘commercial’, .edu from ‘education’, and .gov from ‘government’. Fast forward and there are now over 1,000 TLDs to choose from for your personal blog or professional website. Don’t forget to look for new ccTLDs in our TLD list.
Innovative website owners also use what is known as a ‘domain hack’ to create an exciting name with wordplay. Using both the domain name and the TLD, new words or sayings can be spelled out. Why not try exploring our country domain extension list to see what fun domain hacks you can make?
For example, take Anguilla’s .ai, the British Indian Ocean Territory’s .io, and Colombia’s .co. These website endings can be ‘hacked’ to provide addresses like portfol.io, if you’re a budding photographer, pistach.io if you’re a nut for nuts, or ta.co for if you like to keep it caliente.
Securing an internet domain related to the country you do business in, will help show that you’re a trustworthy organization with an interest in attracting a local market. Both types of TLDs can help you target customers from a specific location, and they may feel more secure using a web space that uses their own country codes.
For example, if you owned a thriving coffee mug store in downtown New York, you might consider registering for thecoffeemug.us or thecoffeemug.nyc. Your website coupled with a country code will help your user to learn more about where your business operates. Plus, if your dream .com domain name has already been taken, it’s always worth a check through our list of ccTLDs to see if it’s available.
Often, although a top-level domain may be classed as a ccTLD, the website content has nothing to do with a specific geographical location. Country domain extensions like .ai are frequently used by artificial intelligence companies, and .co is used by companies across the globe.

While some TLDs may not have any special requirements for registration or require you to be a resident, like .io, .co, .ai, and .ph, others, like .sg and, .fr may have registry requirements.
Typical restrictions include proof of residence, company VAT ID number, and providing a physical address.
You may be wondering if you can use a ccTLD if you don’t live in the location it originally existed for. Please note that this depends entirely on the registry requirements for the ccTLD you wish to register. Some may be fine with you not being a resident, others may need proof of address. Head to the FAQ section at the bottom of each ccTLD page to find out more.
Learn how to register a domain name now.
A website URL is made up of different sections that help computers to identify where to locate the necessary data for that website, in order to deliver it successfully to your web browser.
The rightmost part of URLs are called ‘top-level domains’ and are either generic top-level domains (gTLDs) or country code top-level domains (ccTLDs), (also known as URL suffixes) also help users to understand the type of content they will be seeing. Check out our article What is a TLD? to find out more.
It’s easy to register a domain name. First, check if it is available by using the search bar at the top of the page, if it is, add any additional products you like the sound of, and finally confirm your order.
Domain registration takes just a few minutes, once checkout is complete, your domain can be set up and you can start using it!
This depends on the TLD you want to register. Many ccTLDs and GeoTLDs can be registered for a period of 1 to 10 years, for example. .in, .london, .us, and .ph. However, some can be registered for 1 year, such as .fr, while others like .ai can be registered for an even number of years up to 10 (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 years).
Here at Namecheap we offer a Domain Privacy service free for life so that your information is kept safe, and hidden. However, due to registry restrictions, our service is not available for all TLDs. Please check our helpful Knowledgebase article to find out if the TLD you wish to register is compatible.
The TLD price may vary, depending on which one you wish to register. Once you’ve found a domain name you like, please visit the corresponding page to view the pricing table.
Of course! If you fancy a new start for your site and benefit from great savings to 24/7 live customer support, why not transfer your domain today? There may be some differences to our standard gTLD transfer requirements, so first please check if your domain is eligible for transfer.
DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) will help make sure that visitors to your website aren’t redirected to fraudulent websites. It adds an extra layer of security on top of the DNS by verifying that the information a user sees is authentic.
At the moment, Namecheap and our upstream provider’s systems support 437 TLDs, including .co.uk, .pw, .tv, and .boston. The option to manage DNSSEC is not available for 55 TLDs, so please check our Knowledgebase article to see if it is available for the TLD you wish to register.
It is important to renew your domain to ensure that your site keeps running smoothly. Some TLDs have specific renewal requirements that you should familiarise yourself with.
Some ccTLDs, if not renewed on time, will enter what’s known as the Redemption Grace Period. During this time your domain will stop working, and no changes can be made to the domain. You can find out more by checking out our article on TLDs’ grace periods.
To make life simple, we recommend switching auto-renewal on. This means that your domain will be renewed without you having to do anything.
It’s easy! Purchase your domain, and head to the checkout, where you will have the option to add a Positive SSL Certificate to your cart. This offer is valid for the first year of your registration only.
